Tonic was conceived in 2007 in my one bedroom La Jolla Shores, California beach pad and is based upon simple, root philosophies. I share the love of surfing, taking care of my mind and body, giving back and helping to preserve the environment we all enjoy and live in. Taking full advantage of my ocean blue So-Cal backyard, I began surfing every chance I could get but noticed that over time, the sun and saltwater had begun to take a toll on my hair. Not eager to sacrifice good surf or style, I set out on a mission to develop a line of quality, organic, environmentally-friendly hair care products specifically formulated for those who love being in the outdoors as much as I do.
And so the birth of Tonic.
The name Tonic was the obvious choice. Growing up with a last name like Otonicar was bittersweet. It’s definitely unique and I’ve yet to meet another, but it’s mine and it makes me proud. It’s not the name so much but those who gave it to me. My family is my keynote; they are a continual source of inspiration and remain spiritually, physically and morally invigorating.
Tonic is my gift to my family.
Launching Tonic has proven to be an amazing journey. I’ve been lucky enough to collaborate with some of the most talented and innovative leaders in the hair care and surfing industries, including legendary photographer Aaron Chang. Aaron is considered an icon by many in the action sports industry so having him agree to shoot all of Tonic’s visuals and become an integral part of the Tonic family is truly an honor. Aaron’s limitless talent, benevolent principles and entrepreneurial spirit embodies everything this brand is about. Tonic products are formulated to be 100% earth-friendly, free of sulfates and parabens and designed for those who love sun, surf and style.
